FUT Hair Transplant

Experience world-class FUT hair transplant with Zestige, where expertise, advanced technology, and personalised care come together to deliver exceptional result

Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) is an advanced hair restoration technique, engineered to achieve optimal graft yield in one procedure. It continues as one of the most effective options for our patients who are suffering from moderate to advanced hair loss where efficient coverage is a priority for them.

FUT is often recommended for patients who require a larger number of grafts while preserving the donor area efficiently, helping to deliver consistent, long-lasting results with minimal compromise to existing hair.

Find Out Your Suitability For A Hair Transplant

What is an FUT Hair Transplant?

An FUT hair transplant, also known as Follicular Unit Transplantation, is a surgical hair restoration procedure used to treat thinning hair and baldness.

The treatment involves removing a thin strip of scalp from the donor area, usually at the back of the head, where hair growth is thicker and more resistant to hair loss. The strip is then carefully divided into individual follicular grafts, which are transplanted into areas affected by hair thinning or baldness to create a fuller, natural-looking appearance.

Grafting Zones

During an FUT hair transplant, grafts can be strategically placed in areas such as the hairline, temples, crown, and mid-scalp to restore natural-looking density and improve overall hair coverage.

FUT Hair Transplant Process

An FUT Hair Transplant procedure is performed with meticulous attention to detail. Each stage of the process is carefully executed to protect the integrity of the hair follicles and achieve optimal hair density:

1. Donor Area Preparation

Once the anaesthetic has taken effect, a thin strip of the scalp area which holds natural follicles is thoroughly removed, this area is usually at the back of the head as these follicles are genetically resistant to hair loss and thinning. Once removed, the area is then closed using practiced suture techniques ensuring that the scar around the area is neat and linear.

2. Follicle Extraction

The removed strip is assigned to our sterile preparation area, where under a high powered microscope, it is dissected by highly trained technicians who ensure separation of each individual follicular unit, measuring 1mm in width. We use a microscope to dissect the hairs as this means we achieve approximately 30% more harvested hair compared to older techniques.

This stage is crucial to ensure;

  • Survival of graft
  • Follicular integrity
  • Natural grouping of hairs

3. Recipient Area Preparation

Controlled incisions are made in the recipient area according to a pre-designed plan which is determined by your hair transplant surgeon after your consultation and assessment.

Each site will determine;

  • The shape of the hairline
  • The angle and direction of growth
  • The final distribution and dentistry
  • The angle and orientation of the hairs

Ensuring precision of the above means that your result integrates with your existing hair seamlessly.

4. Follicle Implantation

The individual hairs are placed into their recipient sites ensuring that;

  • There is consistent spacing
  • Natural density of gradients
  • Soft hairline edges

The above ensures that any damage is avoided to the grafts themselves and the surrounding tissue.

5. Post-Procedure Cleaning and Dressing

In the coming weeks after your procedure your donor area will heal and form a thin linear scar. Whilst the transplanted hair sheds as part of the normal cycle, the implants hair begins new visible growth.

Eventually the hair that has been transplanted grows permanently and naturally. Your hair restoration is a gradual process and follows a predictable timeline of recovery and growth;

  • 2–4 weeks: Shedding of transplanted hairs
  • 3–4 months: Early regrowth begins
  • 6–9 months: Increasing density and coverage
  • 12–18 months: Final maturation of results

FUT Hair Transplant Timeline

Recovering from a facelift is a gradual process, with each stage bringing noticeable improvements. Below, the recovery phases are outlined based on specific post-operative periods.

First Couple of Days

The initial stage focuses on healing and follicle stabilisation. You may notice mild swelling, redness, and scabbing in both the donor and recipient areas. It’s important to avoid touching or scratching the treated areas during this phase.

A Week After

Scabs in the transplanted area will begin to dry and fall off naturally. Mild redness may still be visible, but most patients start to feel more comfortable. Only light daily activities can usually be resumed.

2-3 Weeks After

During this phase, some of the transplanted hairs may begin to shed, a natural and expected part of the process called “shock loss.” The follicles remain intact beneath the scalp, preparing for new growth. Any redness or irritation typically subsides.

1-3 Months Later

New hair growth begins to emerge from the transplanted follicles. The hair may initially appear thin and fine, but this is part of the natural growth cycle. It’s essential to remain patient, as results gradually become more noticeable over time.

6 Months After

Hair growth becomes more consistent and denser, with significant improvements in overall coverage and thickness. The new hairs start to blend naturally with existing hair and create a more even appearance.

12-18 Months Later

By this stage, the final results of the FUE Hair Transplant are fully visible. The transplanted hairs have grown thicker, stronger, and integrated with your natural hairline with a permanent and natural-looking outcome.

Who Is Suitable for FUT Hair Transplant?

An FUT hair transplant is most suitable for people experiencing moderate to advanced hair loss who require a larger number of grafts to achieve fuller coverage. This technique is often recommended for individuals with stable pattern baldness who have good donor hair density and are looking for significant restoration in thinning or bald areas.

Suitable candidates for FUT should be in good general health and have realistic expectations about the results and recovery process. Because FUT leaves a linear scar in the donor area, it is generally better suited to people who prefer to keep their hair slightly longer, allowing the scar to remain concealed.

During a consultation at Zestige, your hair transplant consultant will assess the extent of hair loss, scalp flexibility, donor hair quality, and medical history to determine whether FUT is the most effective treatment option.

FUT Hair Transplant Consultation

At Zestige, a comprehensive consultation forms the foundation of your treatment. You will find your consultation to be informative, supportive and reassuring. You will leave knowing what to expect for the preparation, surgery day and aftercare protocol for a successful hair transplant.

We will undertake a detailed clinical assessment which will determine your suitability for hair transplant treatment. This will include;

  • The pattern of your hairloss
  • Condition of your scalp
  • Hair density
  • Review of your medical history and any medication taken
  • Distribution of your hair

Based on the above findings your hair transplant surgeon will then decide if surgical intervention is beneficial and will discuss your realistic expectations from your procedure based on density, coverage and progression over time. We will also take your facial structure and age into consideration when deciding the best approach.

Following your consultation you will receive a personalised treatment plan which indicates the most appropriate technique and estimated number of grafts required.

The aim of your consultation is to ensure that all decisions are clear, clinically justified and align with natural looking long-term outcomes.

Aftercare

At Zestige, our FUE hair transplant aftercare programme provides up to 12 months of dedicated support to optimise both recovery and results. Immediately after the procedure, patients receive a comprehensive aftercare kit, including essential medications, specialised shampoos, and lotions, along with clear, step-by-step guidance on washing, sleeping positions, and caring for the transplanted area.

Will my scar be visible?

The aim is to keep the scar linear and concealed with surrounding hair, the visibility of the scar is dependent on length of hair and individuals healing.
The donor scar is linear and typically concealed within the surrounding hair. Visibility depends on hair length and individual healing.

We use local anaesthetic throughout your procedure so your procedure will not be painful. You may experience some post operative tightness but this is manageable.

The amount of grafts you require will vary depending upon the amount of hair loss you have experiences. We will only use FUT for larger amounts of hair.

Yes! The transplanted hair is resistant to hormonal causes of hair loss and will continue to grow following your procedure.

Like any medical procedure, there is a cost associated with a hair transplant procedure. Weighing up the costs of a hair transplant compared to hairpieces and wigs which require maintenance and replacement is important when making your decision. Hair transplants are not only the most natural solution to hairloss, but they can also be more cost effective than alternative options. You will always be informed of your end costings following your consultation.

Yes, apart from hemophiliacs and those with certain medical conditions. If the donor area is not sufficient, then this technique cannot be used. Your surgeon will determine if FUT is suitable for you based on age and future hair loss patterns.

Just like any surgical procedure, there are always potential side effects and risks. These can include scarring, infection and temporary loss of existing hair around the transplant site, known as shock loss. Your Zestige consultant will discuss all risks with you at your consultation appointment and these will be further detailed in your treatment plan.

The length of a hair transplant procedure depends on the number of grafts being transplanted, but most treatments take between 4 and 8 hours. Larger sessions may require more than one appointment.

The number of grafts required depends on the extent of hair loss, hair thickness, and the level of coverage desired. A consultation with a hair transplant specialist can determine the most suitable treatment plan.

FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) involves removing individual hair follicles directly from the donor area, while FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation) involves removing a small strip of scalp and separating it into grafts. FUE leaves tiny dot-like scars, whereas FUT results in a linear scar.

A hair transplant is a cosmetic procedure that involves moving healthy hair follicles from one area of the scalp, usually the back or sides, to areas affected by thinning or hair loss. The aim is to restore natural hair growth and improve overall hair density.
